HUSTONVILLE — Sirens could be heard off and on for a two-hour span Saturday afternoon in downtown Hustonville However, there was no cause for alarm.

The Hustonville Fire Department was sounding its sirens not because of an emergency, but rather the visits of the town’s children as they took a ride on the department’s fire truck while stopping on Main Street to visit with Santa Claus.

Santa, who made his arrival thanks to Police Chief Allen Weston, found himself a comfy chair near the Christmas tree in  Hustonville City Hall and proceeded to listen to the many requests of hopeful youngsters coming in to see him.

At the time of his visit, there were still several days before Santa would be making his rounds on Christmas Eve, but that didn’t stop the red-suited man from handing out a few early gifts. After each child’s visit, Santa gave them a Christmas stocking stuffed with some gifts.

There were also many gifts sitting in the meeting room at City Hall, with boxes and stacks of toys for Hustonville’s Toys for Kids program and the Toy Tree ready to go.

Mayor Spivey said the city had received $1,500 in cash donations, both business and individual donations. He said the Dollar General Store in Moreland also made a generous donation.

“I’m glad we’re doing this,” he said. “We’re just trying to make Christmas for the kids and I think we’ve done great in getting lots of different toys and things.”
