STANFORD — Stanford residents will now have to think twice before burning debris or trash in their yards.

Tuesday, Stanford Mayor Scottie Ernst issued an executive order prohibiting outdoor burning in the city until further notice.

According to the executive order, Ernst instituted the burn ban because the city is experiencing drought-like conditions, resulting in dry vegetation and hazardous fire conditions.

Stanford Fire Chief Scott Maples has determined that an extreme fire hazard exists and that any open burning outdoors may become difficult to control. The possibility of an out-of-control burn would “require the use of extraordinary manpower and resources and create the potential for loss of life and property.”

Open pit cooking and charcoal grilling for the purpose of food preparation are exempted.

The Stanford Fire Department may permit outdoor burning in its jurisdiction as they see fit by first notifying Bluegrass 911 Dispatch.
