Last week the Hustonville Elementary 1st grade team decided to collect items for a care package to send to active service members in honor of Veterans Day. Students, their families and staff all contributed to the effort by bringing in items and donating money.
One of our HES student’s father, SSG Johnson, is currently deployed with KYARNG and was able to FaceTime with students on Veterans Day from his base to share with students some of his responsibilities. The students were thrilled with the experience and excited to send the items they have been collecting.
The 1st grade HES team was overwhelmed by the generosity of the school and community in helping with the project and even had one anonymous local veteran donate funds to cover all the shipping costs. As a result of the funds and supplies, care packages will be able to be sent now, at Christmas and in the spring.
The collection drive did so well that care packages will also be sent to two other veterans who have ties to Hustonville Elementary.
The HES 1st grade team is very appreciative of the support received and would like to thank all service members for what they have done and continue to do for our country.
