Bluegrass Greensource will be holding the 10th annual Main Street Clean Sweep in celebration of the 54th Earth Day. During Earth Week, April 15-22, local community coordinators will work with Bluegrass Greensource to host cleanup events in 20 communities throughout Central Kentucky.

Volunteers in each community will join together to clean up litter from city streets, parks and local waterways.  In 2023, nearly 800 volunteers worked to pick up over 9,300 pounds of litter in just one week.

Lincoln County’s Clean Sweep will be April 13 in Stanford from 9 a.m. to noon. It’s coordinated by the Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce. The Community Coordinator is Jane Vanhook (jvanhook@lincolnky.com or 859-326-1870).

Litter thrown on the street ends up in storm drains and can adversely impact water quality. When it rains, stormwater picks up litter and takes it directly into nearby streams and can harm fish and other wildlife. The efforts of Bluegrass Greensource over the last 9 years have helped facilitate over 150 community cleanups, helping collect over 150,000 pounds of trash.

“Earth Month is a wonderful opportunity for communities to come together and help the environment,” states Amy Sohner, Executive Director of Bluegrass Greensource. “Main Street Clean Sweep allows individuals to participate in Earth Day activities in their own backyard but also be part of something much bigger in our entire region. It brings our focus to local communities right here in Central Kentucky empowering our friends and neighbors to play an active role in creating a sustainable Bluegrass.”

Main Street Clean Sweep encourages community members to get engaged and volunteer at a cleanup near them! The following community cleanups are scheduled throughout the Central Kentucky area:

  • Saturday, 4/13 – Lincoln County / Stanford
  • Friday, 4/19 – Mercer County / Harrodsburg
  • Saturday, 5/4 – Boyle County / Danville

Main street clean sweep is presented in partnership with; Rumpke, Commonwealth Credit Union,  Lexington Pavement Sweep, Gresham Smith, WUKY 91.3 and Bechtel Parsons Blue Grass.
