Despite the cold temperatures and less than ideal weather, several county officials along with community members met in Broughtontown on Saturday, Feb. 17 to break ground on a new Farmers Market Pavilion. 

The planning for the pavilion was a long process and those involved in making the project a reality are now seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. 

In 2022, the Kentucky Agriculture Development Board sent out a press release to the Lincoln County Fiscal Court with information about funds that would be available during the 2023 fiscal year. 

The funds were to be made available to those interested in the growth of agriculture in the community. 

Magistrate Dan Gutenson shared this information with the Broughtontown Community Center (BCC) Board of Directors who voted unanimously to pursue this project.

In the summer of 2023, Project Manager Cathy Thompson, with support of board members, submitted a grant proposal to build a 24 by 32-foot pavilion on the north side of the grounds. The process required submitting bids from potential builders and a detailed plan of how the market would operate on a regular schedule. 

During the summer, members of the community were invited to bring their agricultural products to sell at BCC and several people took advantage of the opportunity, despite not having a covered area to sell their products. 

The trial market was open from early May through late September. 

Upon final grant approval from KADF, and with additional support from the Lincoln County Fiscal Court, BCC was then able to sign a building contract and break ground for the future covered Farmers Market Pavilion. 

The groundbreaking was held Saturday with a silent and live auction as well as live music.
