Ephraim McDowell Family & Internal Medicine welcomes Todd Lackney, D.O., to the practice. He will be joining Dr. Mohammad Shahzad, Dr. Justin Lande, and advanced practice providers, Sabrina Wellman and Sheena McGuffey. He will begin seeing patients on Aug. 14.

Lackney attended medical school at the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Athens, Ohio. He completed his osteopathic internship and internal medicine residency at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center in Toledo, Ohio. Lackney practices Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine, which is a hands-on technique that involves moving and manipulating a person’s muscles and joints to help diagnose, prevent, and treat certain conditions.

Lackney has lived in Danville for 22 years. He is the proud father of four girls, three of whom live and work in Cincinnati and one is a sophomore at the University of Kentucky. He has been a life-long exerciser and learner, and is looking forward to exploring new hobbies in the future.

New primary care clinic coming to Danville

Ephraim McDowell Health announces the opening of a new primary care clinic in Danville on Sept. 1. Ephraim McDowell Internal Medicine will be staffed by Dr. Karl Hempel, M.D. and located at 640 E. Lexington Ave., Suite B.

Hempel will be practicing at the same facility as his father, Dr. Richard Hempel who will continue in an independent MDVIP affiliated practice. Services will include all aspects of adult primary care including acute and chronic illness as well as preventive care medicine. Office hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Please call (859) 239-4950 to schedule an appointment.

Hempel is board-eligible in internal medicine, having completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Kentucky where his focus was on primary care medicine. He served as the primary care chief resident. He has a passion for preventive medicine and providing the most evidence-based care possible. He has a special interest in providing screenings for individuals at higher risk for cancer and other complications due to genetic mutations.

Hempel lives in Danville with his wife, Ashley, daughter, Ellison, and their dog, Charlie. When he is not working, he enjoys spending time with family, hiking and playing board games with friends. Hempel grew up in Danville and is a graduate of Danville High School, where he was on the soccer, track, cross country and swim teams.

EMH welcomes new provider

Ephraim McDowell Health welcomes advanced practice provider, Seirra Braden, PA-C, to the Medical Staff. Braden will start on August 14 and will practice with Dr. Elisa Spindel and Jessica Lester, A.P.R.N., at Ephraim McDowell Mercer Pediatrics.

Braden completed her bachelor’s degree in biology and chemistry at Western Kentucky University and a master’s degree in physician assistant studies from Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas. She is board-certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. She has a special interest in breast-feeding support for new mothers, preventive care, and parent/patient education.

Braden lives in Mercer County with her husband, Bailey, their daughter, Amelia, and their two dogs. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with family and friends, traveling and gardening.

Nurse nominated for DAISY Award

Ephraim McDowell Health recognized one of its nurses for her extraordinary patient care at Danville Family Physicians. Cecily Verhoven, APRN, was one of many nurses nominated for the DAISY Award. A resident of Boyle County, Cecily has been caring for patients at Ephraim McDowell for 24 years.

She was nominated by a patient who said, “My daughter was diagnosed with cancer and passed away. Cecily called us after hours so we could talk. After her passing, Cecily has talked and encouraged me. She really cares about her patients. She deserves to be honored for her kindness to everyone. She loves her patients and their families. She has helped me so much.”

Ephraim McDowell is proud to recognize nurses with the DAISY Award, a national program that honors the compassionate care and clinical excellence that nurses bring to their patients every day.
