The Perryville Battlefield State Historic Site will host the 8th Regiment Band from Rome, Georgia will perform on June 2. The free concert will begin at 7:30 p.m., at the main pavilion near the parks visitor center in Perryville.

The 8th Regiment Band is the modern recreation of the 19th century Band of the 8th Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry, whose men served from 1861-65. Dressed in uniforms of the period, the band performs music from original band scores and authentically styled arrangements from piano scores. The musicians use original and reproduction instruments of the mid-nineteenth century.

The band also dons Union Blue and performs as the Band of the 8th New York National Guard, The Washington Greys, thus giving equal exposure to the music and heroism displayed on both sides in the Civil War.

The modern 8th Regiment Band has been featured in re-enactments of the battles of Gettysburg, Shiloh, Murfreesboro, Kennesaw Mountain, Atlanta, Franklin, Olustee, Resaca and many others. The bands high musical standards and meticulous efforts at authentic recreation have built it an avid following and an enviable reputation.

The 8th Regiment Band has been featured in several made-for-television movies including The Class of 61 and Love and Honor. The band is also featured in the multi-media show at Chickamauga Battlefield Park and has appeared on Good Morning America and National Public Radio.

Gaining prominence and wide recognition from its performances, the 8th Regiment Band has made numerous appearances at the Great American Brass Band Festival in Danville and was a featured group at the National Civil War Band Festival at Campbellsville, Kentucky. They have given numerous concerts at colleges and universities throughout the southeast as well as presenting clinics at the Southeastern United States Band Clinic and the Georgia Music Educators Convention.

The program will be appropriate entertainment for the entire family, so bring your lawn chair and blankets and enjoy an insight into the music and emotions of the mid 19th century.
