Last March Crab Orchard Elementary School received a $1,300 donation from the Lincoln County Farm Bureau Women’s Group to use toward a Tower Garden in Mrs. Manier’s classroom.
Mrs. Manier and her students planted seeds for Bibb lettuce, gourmet lettuce, kale, arugula, and sweet basil. They took care of those for two weeks, then transplanted them to the garden tower. The students were involved in everything from putting the garden tower together, learning how to get it set up, and taking care of it.
Every week they checked the ph level and added water as needed. After six weeks the students harvested the leafy greens, washed them, and put their salads together. Both fourth-grade and fifth-grade classes all enjoyed a salad from the garden tower.
The Lincoln County Farm Bureau Women’s Group helped make this project possible.
