He was born on June 9, 1944, in Ottawa, Kentucky to James Oather and Marie (Williams) Renner. He attended a two-room schoolhouse, Rowland Elementary School, near Stanford and was a 1962 graduate of Crab Orchard High School. He was of the Baptist faith, having accepted Christ as his Lord and Saviour.
Upon high school graduation, Thomas enlisted in the United States Navy, where he became a parachute rigger. In 1970, Thomas began his Army career, joining the United States Army Reserve; he retired as a Chief Warrant Officer in 1986, after proudly serving his country for over 24 years.

Thomas attended Urbana College, Urbana, Ohio, graduating with a Business degree. He opened TREN Motors in Stanford beginning in 1984. He was a dedicated car enthusiast and thoroughly enjoyed competing in many local billiard tournaments. He was an avid college football and basketball fan, rooting on the True Blue! An event Thomas refused to miss was the annual Crab Orchard High School Class of ‘62 Reunion, where he loved laughing and reminiscing with lifelong friends and classmates. Living on the lake gave him ample opportunity to enjoy his love of fishing, often with neighbors! He was a dedicated husband, father, brother, and friend who will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
