STANFORD — A temperature reading of 99 degrees didn’t stop runners and walkers from taking to the streets of downtown Stanford to compete in the 2nd Annual Fly Sam Fly 5K Run/Walk.

More than 160 individuals participated in the Sunday afternoon event, which was established last summer in memory of 13-year-old Sam Singleton, who loved running, as well as drama, canoeing and hamsters.

One of the coolest parts of the race took place about 19-½ minutes into the run when Elijah “Hoot” Johnson of Stanford crossed the finish line to win the race with a red Fly Sam Fly cape flapping in the wind behind him. Johnson, a 13-year-old who is on the Lincoln County High School cross country team, covered the 3.1-mile race in a time of 19:27.77. Johnson posted the only sub-20 time.

Middle school athletes would claim both the overall male and female titles in the run, with Abigail Bastin, 11, of Stanford the top female finisher. Bastin, who placed fourth overall, posted a time of 21:25.74.

The race’s Top 25 was dominated by youth, with 24 of the top 25 between 11 and 19 years of age.

Brody Blanton, 12, of Waynesburg, clinched the runner-up spot in the race, timed at 20:05.24. Baylor Mattingly, 17, of Hustonville, ran third in a time of 20:21.98. Trevar Lay, 19, of Harrodsburg, was the fourth male across, and the fifth overall, crossing in 21:43.82. Brad Adams, 16, of Stanford, was fourth in the male division in 21:46.91 and Sam’s brother, Gabe Singleton, 17, of Waynesburg, was fifth in 21:53.57.

In the female division, Ava Morgan, 15, of Stanford finished second to Bastin and 14th overall in a time of 23:34.62, Alexis Slone, 14, of Waynesburg, was third in the division and 21st overall in 25:00.47, Lucy Singleton, 16, of Waynesburg, Sam’s sister, was fourth and 23rd overall in 25:34.19 and Bailey Story, 15, of Stanford, was fifth and 24th overall in 26:15.64.

Competitors in this year’s Fly Sam Fly ranged in age from 7 to 80 years of age, with some from as far away as Cocoa Beach, Florida. The youngest individuals on course, though, were 6-month-old twins Oliver and Silas Manion, who were pushed along in the race by their dad, McClee Manion.

Proceeds from the event go toward The Sam Singleton Scholarship Fund for Lincoln County students.
