STANFORD — For the second time in seven days, the Lincoln County Lady Patriot volleyball team scored a 3-0 sweep of visiting Danville Christian Academy.
Lincoln, which moved to .500 on the season with the win, was in control for most of the match, however, DCA challenged the Lady Patriots more in the rematch.
“The first time we played them we were learning a new lineup, so I had four different players playing different positions and we didn’t really sub,” Lincoln coach Samantha Torres said. “This time around, they’ve got their rotation down, so we were able to sub a lot more.”
Along with seniors Peyton Griffin, Shelbie Mills, Kasie Mullins and Alyssa Salyers and juniors Emery Bertram, Kaylie Cotter, Sarah Beth Grimes, Kaylynn Smith and Jada Whited, Torres was able to make full use of her bench. Sophomores Abbie Cook, Mayci Godbey, Lacey Peyton, and Michaela Tracy and freshmen Reagan Griffin and Riley Griffin complete the Lincoln roster.
“I love those games when you can get more players in,” said Torres.
DCA (4-10) held the early lead in every set of Monday’s match, with the Lady Warriors posting their largest lead, 3-0, in the opening set. After getting its first sideout, the Lady Pats scored five straight points off the service of Kaylie Cotter to go on top to stay, 6-3.
Lincoln (8-8) led by as many as 10 points, 21-11, in the first set before moving on for the 25-17 win.
The Lady Patriots trailed 2-0 in the second set before breaking on a 10-0 run. Peyton Griffin handled the service in the breakout run. The Lady Pats went on to win the set 25-12. Their largest lead of the set was 15 points.
Both teams started the third set with serving errors to make it 1-1. Lincoln finally gained the advantage off the serve of Sarah Beth Grimes then slowly proceeded to put the game away. DCA kept the game tight in the final set before Lincoln finally put the set away 25-19 and claim the match win.
“In this game, there were mistakes on our end and then they scored, but we still got the win,” Torres said. “We had several silly mistakes tonight, but those are small tweaks to work on.”
Peyton Griffin led the Lincoln game stats with eight aces, four kills, four assists and one dig. Kaylie Cotter and Kaylynn Smith also served up some aces in the win with three apiece.
Emery Bertram slammed six kills and Alyssa Salyers had four for Lincoln. Sarah Beth Grimes put up double-digit assists once again with 12 in the DCA win. She also had one block. Michaela Tracy also had a block.
Monday’s 3-0 win over DCA was the third straight home sweep posted by the Lady Patriots. Sandwiched between the two DCA victories was a 3-0 shutout of visiting East Jessamine this past Thursday. Lincoln won 25-8, 25-19 and 25-22.
