STANFORD — Seventy-three runners and walkers laced up their shoes to take part in the 3rd Annual Marching Ant 5K Race in downtown Stanford on Memorial Day.

The race, which was hosted by the Stanford Lions Club, is held each year to promote diabetes awareness. Proceeds from the event are divided between a local diabetes organization and local Lions Club projects.

Andrew Pence, 12, of Stanford was the overall winner, crossing the finish line in a time of 21:03, seven seconds ahead of second-place finisher Jontai McQueen. McQueen, 36, completed the race in a time of 21:10.

A mere 13 seconds was all that separated the top four runners in the 5K. Davis Wardrip, 15, crossed in third place in 21:13 while Cheryl Downs, 53, followed in fourth in 21:16. Downs’ time earned him the title of Master Winner-Male, which was awarded to the top runners 40 years and older.

Charissa Dawn Phelps, 38, of Science Hill was the overall female winner in the race, covering the 3.1-mile distance in 23:52. She placed 11th overall.

Rounding out the top four female finishers were Sharon Bach, Autumn Mastroianni and Bobbie Perkins. Bach, 49, was second behind Phelps, crossing in 24:24. Bach’s time, which placed her 13th overall, earned her the Master Winner-Female title. Mastroianni, 37, finished 15th overall in 25:26 and Perkins, 42, ran 16th in 26:27.
