Story/Bandura doubles team wins marathon match; Amon/Wilks romp

STANFORD — It was a tale of two completely different No.1 matches on the Baughman Bros. Courts at Lincoln County High School Thursday, with the Lady Patriots’ top-seeded doubles team of Raelyn Amon and Kaitlynn Wilks making short work of their match while the Patriots’ top-seeded team of Carter Story and Kade Bandura was embroiled in a marathon match.

While both matches against visiting Southwestern resulted in Lincoln victories, the Amon/Wilks team had a much easier time notching the win as they shut out their opponents 8-0. The match lasted around 30 minutes as the Lady Patriots’ senior duo dominated the Lady Warriors’ top team of Harlee Jordan and Terae Handlos.

Story, a senior, and Bandura, a junior, were the first ones on the court in Thursday’s match as they prepared to take on Southwestern’s top team of Josh Carey and Max Brainard. Approximately 2-½ hours later, after many other matches had been started and completed, the duo finally walked off the court with the win.

It was a back-and-forth fight between the two teams from the opening serve, as they repeatedly exchanged games in the match before reaching an 8-8 deadlock to force a tiebreaker. In a tiebreaker, a team has to win by two points with a minimum score of 7 points. Typically, tiebreakers end when a team hits 7 and doesn’t go higher than 10. But not Thursday’s tiebreaker. Story and Bandura were finally able to net the “W” by edging Carey and Brainard 20-18 for the 9-8 final.

Lincoln got the win in both those doubles matches, but the teams would end up splitting the match. The Lady Patriots edged past the Lady Warriors 3-2. Unfortunately, the Story/Bandura win was the only Patriot victory in the match as the Warriors won 4-1.

The Lady Patriots would sweep the doubles competition, with the senior team of Abby Hale and Grace Muse winning 8-6 over Southwestern’s Bethany Jordan and Paige Daniels in the two-seeded match.

Emily Byrd posted the other win for the Lady Patriots in singles play, beating Southwestern’s Chloe Lowe 8-1 at three.
Alyea Towle, playing at two, challenged Southwestern’s Angela Wilson in the two-seeded match, picking up four games before falling 8-4.

Lincoln’s William Hawkins and the doubles team of Lee Amon and Colin Green also won four games in their matches before bowing 8-4. Southwestern’s Camden Harris beat Hawkins at one in singles and Warriors Luke Jacobs and Cameron Pierce topped Amon and Green at two in doubles.
