Teams invade LCHS for 12th Region basketball tourney

Eight teams are set to hit the J.C. Eddleman court at Lincoln County High School over the next six days for the 12th Region Girls Basketball Tournament, hoping to earn that championship win and a coveted state tournament appearance.
The regional tourney, which includes the defending state champion, begins Monday, Feb. 26 and runs through Saturday, March 3. Opening-round games are Monday and Tuesday, the semifinals are Friday and the finish is on Saturday afternoon.
The first teams taking the floor Monday are Southwestern and West Jessamine. Southwestern (22-7) comes in as the 48th District champion while West Jessamine (11-16) comes in as the 46th District runner-up. Tip time for the opener is 6:30 p.m.
In the second game Monday, it’s 47th District champ Casey County facing off against 45th District runner-up Boyle County. Casey (24-6) and Boyle (20-8) tip off at 8 p.m.
Lincoln County, last year’s regional runner-up and the current 45th District champion, will begin its regional run Tuesday. The Lady Patriots (23-6) will play 48th District runner-up Wayne County in the first game at 6:30 p.m.Wayne is 9-20 on the season.
Mercer County, the defending state champion and 46th District champion, will take on Rockcastle County in the nightcap Tuesday at 8 p.m. Mercer comes into the game at 29-3. Rockcastle, the 47th District runner-up, comes in at 18-12.
The semifinal round will be played Friday, March 2. The Southwestern/West Jessamine winner will take on the Casey/Boyle winner in game one at 6:30 p.m. while the Lincoln/Wayne winner will play the Mercer/Rockcastle winner in game two at 8 p.m.
The championship game will be played Saturday, March 3 at 5 p.m.
