Tennis: LC netters post 9-0 shutouts
Published 2:08 pm Friday, April 28, 2017
The Lincoln County High School tennis teams enjoyed the thrill of victory on the courts this past week, however, they also endured their share of the agony of defeat.
Both the Lincoln boys and girls teams posted a 9-0 win, with the boys topping Mercer County and the girls rolling Rockcastle County. But the Lady Patriots would stumble 8-1 in their match with Mercer and both Lincoln squads faltered in matches with Boyle County and Garrard County.
The Patriot netters capped off their regular season schedule Monday afternoon with a romp, in their 9-0 blanking of host Mercer County.
Lincoln gave up no more than two games in five of the six singles matches contested. Jacob Baird, playing at the five seed, did not give up a single game, blanking Mercer’s Ryan Allen 6-0. Ryan Montgomery, playing at the one seed, and Roland Taylor, playing at two, both won 6-1, with Montgomery beating Jackie Chang and Taylor defeating Boo Marcum. At the four seed, Carter Story posted a 6-2 win over Camden Mosley while, at the six seed, Lee Amon won 6-2 over Nicholas Walden.
In doubles play, Lincoln’s top team of Taylor and Montgomery and the three seed of Baird and Amon both won 6-0. Taylor and Montgomery defeated Chang and Marcum and Baird and Amon topped Allen and Walden.
The closest call of the match came at the three seed in doubles, with a tiebreaker deciding the winner. Patriots Bandura and Story emerged as the winners, defeating Becknell and Mosley 7-6 in a 6-1 tiebreaker.
“This was the last match for the boys, so it was a great way to end the regular season,” Lincoln coach Allen Lewis said. “Our seniors, Roland and Ryan, are hitting their stride at the right time of the year. And our younger players are playing the best they have all season.”
The Lady Patriots notched their 9-0 shutout against Rockcastle County, dominating the Lady Rockets Friday at LCHS.
The Lincoln girls simply shut out the competition in doubles play, taking a 3-0 lead behind back-to-back-to-back 8-0 wins. Kaycie Bandura and Savanna Smith defeated Courtlyn Vanhook and Hannah Newley at the one seed, Raelyn Amon and Logan Godbey won over Joy Frith and Rebekah Lake at two and Adie Hogue and Alyea Towle topped Janie Bowman and Heather Thomas at three.
The Lady Rockets presented more of a challenge to Lincoln in singles play. Bandura battled with Vanhook before claiming an 8-5 win at one, Smith gave up three games to Maggie Franklin before posting a 6-3 win at two and Raelyn Amon also gave up three games in her 8-3 win over Frith at three.
Logan Godbey faced the toughest opposition of the match in her singles match with Rockcastle’s Rebekah Lake, battling to the wire to claim the win. The two athletes traded games throughout the match and ended up in a 7-7 tie. But Godbey would dominate in the tiebreaker, outscoring Lake 7-1 to clinch the win.
In the girls/boys match at Mercer Monday, Towle was the lone Lady Patriot netting a win. Towle, who was 3-2 on the courts this past week, beat Mercer’s Karman Murray 6-1 in the fourth-seeded singles match.
It was a rough day for Lincoln tennis in a road match at Boyle County, with the Lady Patriots falling 9-0 while the Patriots were defeated 5-0.
Muse had the closest match for the Lady Patriots, putting up four games in a 6-4 loss to Grace McDaniel at the six seed.
Taylor and Montgomery came oh-so-close to a win in boys doubles only to be edged by Boyle’s top-seeded team of Josh Bishop and Adrien Van Steenlandt 7-6 in an 11-9 tiebreaker.
Homecourt advantage did not help Lincoln when Garrard County came to LCHS for a makeup match. The Lions edged the Patriots 5-4 in boys action and the Lady Lions rolled 8-1 in girls action.
Taylor, Bandura, Baird and the doubles team of Baird and Amon were responsible for Lincoln’s four wins in the match. Taylor won 8-0 over Cameron Carver at one in singles, Bandura was an 8-2 winner at three over Jessie Abrams and Baird topped John Tuttle 8-4 at five. Baird and Amon collected their doubles win at three, beating Abrams and Coty Sanford 8-1.
Maggie Peck was the only Lincoln girl posting a “W” as she defeated Garrard’s Hannah Keith 8-6 at five in singles.
