It may seem sad that the winter sports season has come to a close, but now sports fans can leave behind the raucous, crowded gymnasiums for …
Sigh.
For the cold bleachers of early spring.
For most of the late winter, we have been blessed with warmer-than-usual weather. However, now that it’s time to go back outside nature hasn’t quite made the outdoors ready for us yet.
So, as you drag out the folding chairs and head outdoors for the start of the Lincoln County High School spring sports season be sure to grab a jacket and maybe a blanket to put around your shoulders.
Coach Allen Lewis and the Lincoln County boys and girls tennis teams got a taste of colder weather in their opener against Casey County last Friday. They could find themselves back out in the cold today (Thursday) as they travel to West Jessamine for a boy/girl doubleheader with temperatures forecasted in the mid-40’s.
The bats will get crackin’ at LCHS today, with the Lady Patriot softball team set to hit the diamond at 6 p.m. Lincoln is hosting Lexington Christian in its season opener.
The Lady Patriot softball team went 21-15 in 2016, with the season coming to an end in a loss to Garrard County in the semifinal round of the 45th District Tournament.
New Bat Patriot coach Tee Ellis will make his head coaching debut Friday as Lincoln travels  to Paul Laurence Dunbar in Lexington. The game is set for a 5:30 p.m. start.
The Bat Patriots finished 8-28 last season. Lincoln was eliminated in the semifinal round of the 45th District Tournament by eventual champion Boyle County.
Track and field rounds out the list of spring sports teams at LCHS and is the last of those teams to kick off the season.
The LCHS track and field teams will travel to Boyle County for their first meet Tuesday, March 21. Rodney Bunch returns to get  the boys and girls teams on track in 2017.
All track meets will be on the road with the exception of a home meet on Apr. 27.
