A former Stanford police officer now working for the Danville Police Department is facing intense public scrutiny after a controversial arrest in October.

The incident involves Officer T.J. Godbey, a former member of the Stanford Police Department, and the arrest of 66-year-old Jon Hardwick at a Walmart in Danville. Police alleged that Hardwick was intoxicated and attempting to steal beer, but surveillance footage showed a forceful takedown by Godbey and two other officers. Last week, all charges against Hardwick were dropped, leading to public outrage and an online petition calling for Godbey’s termination.

The Danville City Commission addressed the matter at its meeting Monday night, where residents voiced their frustrations.

In response, city leaders announced internal and external reviews of the incident.

“We recognize that many folks are alarmed by the situation. These reviews will help us better understand the full context of this incident,” Mayor James Atkins said.

Danville Police Chief Tony Gray also spoke at the meeting, reassuring residents of the department’s commitment to accountability.

“We recognize we serve with the consent of our citizens. I ask for your patience and trust as we move forward with this process,” Gray said.

As reviews of the incident continue, Danville city officials have not provided a timeline for any final decision regarding Godbey’s employment. Findings from the reviews will be made public.

The petition to remove Godbey has garnered thousands of signatures.
