Donald Wayne Coffman, of Casey County, passed away on Sunday, September 8, 2024, at the Casey County Hospital in Liberty, KY. He was 79.
Born June 2, 1945, in Casey County, KY, he was a son of the late Lee Otis “Bob” Coffman and Margaret Raley Coffman. Donald began teaching at St. Catharine’s College in 1968. From 1970-1975, Donald taught at Hustonville High School. He then went to Lincoln County High School when it opened in 1975, where he taught French, Speech & Debate, English, and History, until his retirement in 2005. Donald also taught classes at Campbellsville University. Throughout his teaching career, Donald went on to obtain two Master’s Degrees along with his Rank I. He graduated from Eastern Kentucky University and Lexington Theological Seminary. Shortly after high school and before going to college, Donald worked at McKinney-Brown Funeral Home.
Donald was strong in his faith. He was the director of religious education at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Lebanon, KY from 1984-1996. He was the director of religious education at Scared Heart Catholic Church in Liberty, KY from 1996-2019. Donald was the former Guest House Librarian at Gethsemani Abbey in Trappist, KY and worked for a short time for the Book Store in the Casey County Public Library. He was an Oblate of St. Benedict, St. Meinrad Archabbey, and St. Meinrad, Indiana.
Donald was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a founding member of the Casey County Ecumenical Council. Donald was active in ecumenical affairs, especially Anglican-Catholic dialogue. Along with his love of God, reading, and writing, silence was also very important to Donald. Donald lived by the expression “Beware the person of one book”.
Survivors include his brother, Jimmy Raley (and Teresa) Coffman of Liberty; sister, Linda Lou (and the late Pat) Wethington of Elizabethtown; nephews, Christopher Coffman, J.D., Michael Coffman, Walker Coffman, Robert (and Susan) Wethington, and Richard Wethington; great-nephew, Rhett Raley Coffman; great-nieces, Kennedy Rose Coffman, Abby Wethington, and Ashley Wethington; and a host of other family members and friends also survive.
Funeral mass will be held at 11:00AM on Friday, September 13, 2024, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father George Otuma officiating. Burial will follow in the Old Liberty Cemetery in Bradfordsville, KY.
Visitation will be held from 5-7PM on Thursday, September 12, 2024, at McKinney-Brown Funeral Home followed by a service of reflection at 7:00PM. Visitation on Friday morning will be from 8:00AM until 10:30AM at McKinney-Brown Funeral Home.
