Main Street in Stanford was a busy place April 15 as the Memories on Main event was held in conjunction with the first Stanford Wilderness Road Car Cruise-In of the year.

Historical photos of former businesses and churches on Main Street were enlarged and on display at their previous locations for the public to view.

At each site, a volunteer was there to talk about the history of each location and exchange memories with attendees.

The public was invited for an evening of “reminiscing about the past and dreaming about the future” on behalf of the Lincoln County Public Library (LCPL).

LCPL worked for several months to gather historical photos of businesses and churches that have been located on Main Street in the past.

A community project funded by “Libraries Transforming Communities: Focus on Small and Rural Libraries” aims to document the history of downtown Stanford and the ultimate goal is a book.

The grant is provided by the American Library Association (ALA) and aims to “provide community engagement resources and opportunities specific to the needs of library workers serving small and rural communities,” according to the ALA website.

The LCPL is still looking for old photos, business information, short-memories and dreams for the future of downtown Stanford. Anyone with photos or information to share can send them to stanfordmemoriesonmain@gmail.com or call the LCPL at 606-365-7513.
