STANFORD – As Kentucky’s second oldest city, Main Street in Stanford has transformed many times over the years.

Several businesses have come and gone, with a few still remaining to this day.

The Lincoln County Public Library is hoping to chronicle those changes and they’re asking for the public’s help.

A community project funded by “Libraries Transforming Communities: Focus on Small and Rural Libraries” aims to document the history of businesses in downtown Stanford.

Peggy Denham spoke to Stanford City Council members about the event during the council’s March 10 meeting.

“We’ve been working on it for a couple months, having people come in and write down what businesses they remember,” Denham said. “We got a grant for this project and we’ve decided to have an event.”

The event “Memories on Main” will take place on April 15 from 5 to 7 p.m., in conjunction with the first Stanford Wilderness Road Car Cruise-In of the year.

The public is invited for an evening “reminiscing about the past and dreaming about the future.”

“We’re having pictures enlarged that we’ve received so far and we’re going to put those down Main Street on easels and we’ll have guides at each business, if we can find that many.”

There will be timelines typed up, as well, for the public to add in businesses that they remember that are not already listed.

“If you remember a business at that location, you can tell the guide and they will write it down for you,” Denham said. “We’re hoping to have a booth…where people can record a brief of downtown; just one or two brief sentences…,” she said.

Denham said she is encouraging people who had businesses previously downtown to come and sit with the guides at each location.

“Bring a lawn chair and sit there and talk to people,” she said. “We’re hoping for it to be a pretty big event.”

Denham said rain or inclement weather will postpone the event to a later date.

“The ultimate goal is a book,” she said. “If anyone has anything they want to show that night, it’s show and tell time. Bring anything you’ve got.”
