CRAB ORCHARD – Residents on Elm Street have a new sidewalk to look forward to as the City of Crab Orchard is completing a new stretch of sidewalk between Sycamore Street and Manor Boulevard.
City Commissioner Jerry Shelton said the city installed a portion of sidewalk on Elm Street last year and this project will continue that project, but at a lower cost.
Shelton said some of the work is being done by the city itself, such as tree removal and chipping.
“I’m using a different contractor and we’re doing some of the work ourselves,” Shelton said. “It’s going to be a pretty good amount of savings. We cut down the trees and I just rented a chipper.”
Shelton said the project will take less time and cost less money than the previous project. This portion of sidewalk, including two other small projects, will cost an estimated $30,000, he said.
The sidewalk is expected to be complete within the next few weeks.
“These guys here will probably knock it out in three weeks time, altogether,” he said.
It’s about 1,300 feet of sidewalk, Shelton said.
“That way people will be able to walk around that whole section of town,” he said.
The city also poured a wheelchair ramp at the Post Office and a new portion of sidewalk between the Dollar General and Parts City.
“People were getting out in the road with their buggies so we decided to put a sidewalk between the parking lots,” Shelton said.
