Richard Otto

1926-2021

Richard Otto, age 94, of the Highland community in Lincoln County, Kentucky, passed away Wednesday, July 28, 2021, at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville, Kentucky.

Richard was the youngest son of the late Herman & Margareth Otto. Born Friday, September 17, 1926, in Ottenheim, Kentucky. Because of his mother’s passing, after birth, he was cared for by his sister, Caroline Anderson, who cared for him with her own children.

He attended Saufley school, and upon completion of 8th grade, he joined his siblings to work on the farm. At age 17, he joined the US Navy and arrived for basic training on his 18th birthday. After basic, he was deployed to Ft. Pierce, Florida, before being assigned to Guam as a supply clerk. His tour was cut short by the ending of WWII; and he returned to rural Kentucky.

Richard married Vera Hall Otto, and had a family of three boys and one girl. Surviving are: children, Richard, Jr. & (Arlene), Ruth Ann & (Paul) Hall, and Ronnie Otto; grandchildren, Kevin & (Shannon) Hall, Shannon & (Stacie) Otto, Kelly & Jae (Hyun), Shawn Otto, Shane & (Jessica) Otto, Amanda & (Travis) Hightower, Ryne Otto, and Chandler Otto; great-grandchildren, Keenan & (Makayla) Hall, Kyler Hall, Jadyn Hyun, Elizabeth Otto, Ethan, Colton & Leah Otto, and Ashlyn, Braelyn, Ellelyn, Madelyn, & Jaxon Hightower; great-great grandchildren, Halle & Maddix Hall; special affection for nephew, Doug Anderson; nieces, Barbara Lewis and Linda Gray; nephews, Dave & Dan Otto, and Don Otto, and Mike Smith, & Steve Fraysure, and Alma Bragg & family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister; brothers: Herman, Henry, Dave, Robert; son, Frank; wife, Anne Charles Otto; nephews, Chester & Raymond Anderson; and niece, Ruth Lyons.

Richard was a faithful member to Fairview Baptist Church, for 75 plus years; and he taught Sunday School for many of those years. His love for the church and missions was very evident. He traveled to several countries and several states with the Baptist Disaster Relief and was also a volunteer at Fort Logan Hospital Auxiliary.

He was a faithful member of the American Legion Post #18. One of his fondest memories was representing Lincoln County veterans, by placing a memorial wreath at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, DC. Richard was also honored to be selected for the Honor Flight.

Public Visitations will be held 6-8PM Friday, August 6, 2021, and 11AM-1PM Saturday, August 7, 2021, at Fairview Baptist Church, Halls Gap, Kentucky. The Public Funeral Service will be held 1:00PM Saturday, August 7th, at the church. Bro. Johnny Baker & Bro. David Conrades will officiate the service. Burial, with Full Military Honors, will follow in Fairview Baptist Church Cemetery. Kevin Hall, Keenan Hall, Kyler Hall, Shannon Otto, Shawn Otto, Shane Otto, Ryne Otto, and Ethan Otto will serve as Active Pallbearers. Chandler Otto, Jadyn Hyun, Elizabeth Otto, Amanda Hightower, Kelly Hyun, Leah Otto, and Colton Otto will serve as Honorary Pallbearers.
