CRAB ORCHARD – The Crab Orchard Fire Department will be looking for a new Rescue 1 truck after a collision this weekend that left the department’s vehicle totaled.

According to Crab Orchard Fire Chief Larry Owsley, who was driving the Rescue 1 truck at the time of the collision, the accident occurred at about 7 p.m. Saturday, June 26.

“We were responding to another auto accident on Lancaster Street, up just past the school,” Owsley said. “As we were responding, we went to go around a vehicle, and they had pretty much stopped, and we went to go around the vehicle and about time we got over in the other lane to go around, they turned in front of us.”

Owsley said only minor injuries were sustained. Owsley and fellow firefighter Rodney Price, who was the passenger in the firetruck, were both treated for those minor injuries and released from the hospital.

“We just went to get checked out,” he said. “The driver of the other vehicle was transported to the hospital also with minor injuries, and treated and released.”

Owsley said the truck is probably totaled.

“We called the insurance company this morning and they’re waiting on the accident report from Kentucky State Police…” he said.

“From indications it’s totaled because the frame’s bent and stuff like that.”

Owsley said it’s a truck that will be missed.

“It’s a ‘97 model but it only had like 12,000 miles on it,” he said.

The department has some back-up options, Owsley said, and neighboring departments have offered to help out until a new truck can be purchased.

“We put all the equipment over on our engine (truck) and that’s what we’ll carry it on until we get something lined out or get another truck,” he said. “All the other departments around us have also offered help if we need it. We all help each other.”
