The Stanford Lions Club is preparing for its annual Radio Auction set for March 28 from noon to 8 p.m. on WPBK. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the auction.

Lion Bob Swett and Lion Mary Benton Friend are the co-chairs of this year’s event and they, as well as other Lions Club members, are working very hard to make sure the auction is a success.

The Lions Club will be sending out request letters to approximately 100 businesses asking for donations and will make personal visits to over 100 more. To make the auction a success, at least 160 items are needed to fill the eight hours of radio time.

“We are happy to announce that we just started requesting items two weeks ago and have already received over 50 items,” said Swett. “As we receive items, they are posted on our Stanford Lions Club Facebook page so that you can view each item. 24 hours before we go on air a complete list of items will be listed in the order that they will be auctioned off.”

Items already donated include: an Instant Pot, a one- or two-night stay at different hotels or resorts, a zipline ride over Red River Gorge, many restaurant gift cards, amusement park passes, golf passes, and the list goes on.

In the last 10 years, the Stanford Lions Club has raised over $75,000 from the radio auction that has been used for community needs – 100% of all funds raised have to be returned to the public. “The Stanford Lions have served this community for 75 years and we have 40 active members and we hope to continue serving this community for the next 75 years. Working together we can do this,” said Swett. “We have built the picnic shelter and picnic tables at the Veterans Park, given many Lincoln County High School seniors college scholarships, helped the police department, fire department, and Emergency Management team purchase equipment that was so needed. We also hold  food drives, help many families during the Holidays and, again, the list goes on.”

Swett and Friend said the annual Radio Auction would not have been able to raise monies to help the community without the support of WPBK radio, saying “We could not hold this event without thanking Jonathan Smith and the staff at WPBK who help us move things along and keep us on air.”

Before the auction begins all rules and phone numbers will be announced.
