STANFORD — SaraGrace Ramlochan was recently chosen to be the new student representative on the Lincoln County School Board.

The student representative is chosen by the high school administration and is a one-year (2019-20) seat on the board. Ramlochan’s first board meeting was on Sept. 12.

“I agreed to this position because of the enriched involvement that I would have once I’m active and attending meetings,” Ramlochan said. “I expect to be a voice for unheard students.”

Ramlochan, the daughter of Jai and Loliter Ramlochan, is currently a senior at Lincoln County High School and resides in Waynesburg. Growing up, she attended Waynesburg Elementary School. She enjoys playing the piano in her free time and is involved in various school clubs.

Ramlochan recently won the 2020 Lincoln County Distinguished Young Woman title. She said winning the award meant the world to her, stating “After having a couple days to decompress, winning this award makes me feel like I can have an impact on my community.”

The student representative seat on the board started in 2017. Superintendent Mike Rowe said he presented the idea of adding a student representative when he was interviewing for his position as superintendent. He felt like it was a great way to give students a voice and allow students to gain more knowledge about what the board does.

“The job of the student representative is to give us the input about what the kids at the schools want,” he said. “We want our students to have a voice in the decision-making process.”

After high school, Ramlochan plans to attend college and study mechanical engineering. Colleges she is currently looking at include Campbellsville University, the University of Kentucky and the University of South Florida.
