CRAB ORCHARD — Local residents and visitors flocked to Main Street and Lancaster Street in downtown Crab Orchard Friday and Saturday to help the east Lincoln County community celebrate its annual Independence Day festival.

Hundreds of families and friends gathered along the downtown streets over the weekend to watch a parade, take in a car and tractor show, feast on a country ham breakfast and enjoy a street dance and concert before capping off the event with a fireworks display on Saturday night.

Activities for the “There’s No Place Like Home” themed event got underway Friday evening with a watermelon crawl, the crowning of Miss Crab Orchard royalty, a car cruise and a street dance.

The annual country ham breakfast at Crab Orchard Elementary School kicked off Saturday’s activities with a car and tractor show following on the school grounds.

The parade hit the pavement at 1 p.m. with the color guard leading the procession.

Kids ran after candy thrown by parade riders, as vintage and custom vehicle, big truck and mini car engines roared, an Oleika Shriner train rang its bell and emergency sirens wailed.

Saturday’s warmer temperatures forced many to seek shelter in their homes or in the shade following the parade, but the crowd reemerged later in the evening with the start of the street dance and a concert by Josh Logan.

At the end of the concert at 10 p.m., the crowd moved down near the Eastern Kentucky Scrap Metal Yard for the annual fireworks display.
