STANFORD — Recent Lincoln County High School graduates Maddy Boyle, Emma King, Anna Lane, Zaria Napier and Kaitlynn Wilks are the latest recipients of the Teresa Ann Johnson M.D. Memorial Scholarship.

This is the sixth year the scholarship has been given in memory of Dr. Teresa Johnson, a former Stanford physician and standout athlete in basketball and golf at Lincoln County High School in the 1970’s.

Jack Denny Johnson, the father of the late Dr. Johnson, made the presentation of the $200 scholarships to Boyle, King, Lane, Napier and Wilks, who just received their high school diplomas Friday.

All five of the former Lady Patriot basketball standouts will be continuing their basketball careers at the collegiate level this fall.

Four of the Lady Patriots are stayng in-state, King, the first Lady Patriot to commit, will play for the University of Kentucky, Boyle will suit up for Kentucky Wesleyan College, Napier will take her talents to Asbury University and Lane will play for Midway University. The lone Lady Patriot leaving Kentucky is Wilks, who signed with Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville, Tennessee.

Dr. Teresa Johnson was one of the first standout athletes at LCHS. She was enrolled in the first freshman class at LCHS and graduated in 1978. She played basketball all four years at Lincoln, receiving All-District, All-Region and Honorable Mention All-State honors. Johnson, who is thought to have scored the first basket in varsity competition in the J.C. Eddleman Gymnasium, was a multiple winner of the team’s Most Valuable Player Award. Johnson was also a talented golfer. She was on the Lady Patriot golf team all four years in high school, earning medalist golfer for central Kentucky. She played in the girls’ Kentucky State Golf Tournament all four years, placing in the top 10 each year. While at Lincoln, Johnson served as student council president, was on the yearbook staff and participated in other school activities. Following graduation, Johnson received a BS degree from the University of Kentucky, a masters degree from Hollins College in Roanoke, Virginia and a Degree of Medicine from American University. She was president of her class and graduated 17th out of 315. She went on to practice medicine in Virginia and Kentucky. Johnson, who once said one of the highlights of her medical career was participating in giving free physicals to the Lincoln County High School athletes, passed away on Jan. 18, 2013.
