DANVILLE — Warm up the bus.

In recent years, a school bus wasn’t necessary to transport local athletes to the state track and field championships, with only a handful of athletes qualifying for the pinnacle event in the sport.

That will not be the case this year.

Yes, when the LCHS track and field teams left the track complex at Boyle County High School following the Class 2A, Region 5 Championships Tuesday, only one Patriot relay team (four athletes) had earned an automatic berth in the state meet, with the 4×200-meter relay team of senior Zack Hazlett and juniors Bricen Alcorn, Calvin Randall and Carlton Randall clinching a regional win.

However, the Patriot and Lady Patriot athletes are proof that one should always give their best effort. After the top two automatic qualifiers, the next 10 best times/heights/marks across the class earn a state-at-large berth and a spot in the state meet. Strong efforts in eight other events at region boosted Lincoln’s roster of state-qualifying individuals from four to 14 in nine different events.

That means a total of 25 Lincoln athletes will be making the trip to Friday’s KHSAA State Championships at the University of Kentucky Outdoor Track and Field Complex in Lexington with 11 alternates also on board for the event.

The boys 4×200-meter relay team left little doubt that it would be making a trip to state as Alcorn, Hazlett and the Randall twins set a new school record with a winning time of 1:33.01, almost three seconds ahead of the runner-up team from East Jessamine, which finished in 1:35.88. The LCHS team’s 1:33.01 mark is the sixth best time in the event in Class 2A pre-race rankings.

The same four runners just missed an automatic state berth in the 4×400-meter relay, placing third behind Boyle County and East Jessamine with a time of 3:34.26. But the strong finish earned the team a state berth in that event as well. The team actually has a higher pre-race ranking in the 4×400 than in the 4×200 with Boyle, East and Lincoln showing top five times in the event. Boyle, which won region with a time of 3:29.32, has the best Class 2A time, and East Jessamine, which finished second in 3:34.11, has the fourth best time.

Carlton Randall will also be going it alone on the track Friday, earning an individual at-large berth in the 100-meter dash. Randall just missed a state-qualifying finish by 11-tenths of a second. Randall sprinted to the finish in 11.40 seconds, just behind Treyveo Longmire of Corbin who crossed in 11.29 seconds.

While the Patriots went from one state bound relay team to two relay teams and an individual competitor, the Lady Patriots went from having no athletes heading to state to nine advancing in six different events.

Sophomores Shayley Reed and McKenzie Settles, freshman Bailey Story and eighth-grader Alexis Slone will be running in the first track event Friday after earning a state-at-large berth in the 4×800-meter relay. The Lincoln quartet finished fourth in regionals at Boyle with a time of 10:35.52.

The Lady Patriots will be running in three of the four relay events run, adding at-large berths in the 4×200-meter and 4×400-meter relays. Settles and Story are a part of all three relay teams running Friday and Reed is on two. Settles, Story, senior Zaria Napier and freshman Maddy Slone turned in a third-place time of 1:52.25 in the 4×200 at region to advance and Reed, Settles, Story and freshman Ava Morgan ran fifth in the 4×400 in 4:32.43 to fall within the at-large range.

Napier will move from the track to the field events for her second state event – long jump. She came in fifth in long jump at region with a distance of 14-10.

There will be three Lady Patriots competing as individuals in state field events, with senior Alexa Wesley and sophomore Suzan Johnson also going up against the state’s best Wesley finished third in high jump at region with a height of 4-08 to clinch a state spot and Johnson advanced to state in discus, finishing seventh at regionals with a throw of 84-11.

The Lady Patriot alternates are Desirae Ellison, Haleigh Ellison, Constance Johnson, Macey Rice, Katherine Rowe, Jasmine Steele and Chloe Tillett. The Patriots alternates are Darius Napier, Jerek Pope, Justin Smith and Austin Wethington.
