Bat Pats fall in marathon 12-inning game

STANFORD — The Lincoln County baseball team dropped a heartbreaker to Casey County Tuesday on the LCHS diamond.
The Bat Patriots outhit the Rebels in the Senior Night game, but it wouldn’t be enough to carry them to victory as the visitors claimed a 9-4 win in 12 innings.
The marathon game was tied 4-4 at the end of six innings and it remained deadlocked until the top of the 12th when Casey’s Logan Stephens drew a bases-loaded walk off Lincoln pitcher Devin Lawhorn, who had just taken the mound. The Rebels would tack on four more runs in the inning to earn the win.
The Bat Patriots got no chance for a rally effort in the bottom of the 12th with Stephens sitting them down in order to end the game.
Lincoln Phillips, who drew the first of four walks off Lawhorn in the 12th, moved on to third on a Zachary Todd double and a walk to Jake McGowan before scoring on the Stephens’ walk. The lead was at 6-4 after another bases-loaded walk, this to Nate Goode to bring in Todd. McGowan later scored on a passed ball and Stephens and Goode were driven in by a Collin Wesley RBI-single.
Lincoln, which fell to 2-26, outhit Casey 16 to 10, led by Wyatt Hon who was 4-for-5 on the day. Shane Brown, Brady Martin, Tanner Smith, Kyle Nevels and Sawyer Carrier each had two hits.
Casey (9-16) opened the game scoring with two runs in the top of the first. McGowan, who went 2-for-5, tagged a two-run home run to center off Lincoln starter Wyatt Hon to put the Rebels up 2-0. Courtesy runner Connor Wesley, on for Todd who reached on an error, scored on the homer.
Lincoln would take the lead by the end of the first. Martin, who led off with a one-out double, scored on a Hon single to get the Bat Patriots on the scoreboard. Lawson Hon, running for his brother Wyatt, scored on a Carrier single to tie the game at 2-all.
Kelley Bastin scored the go-ahead run with a ground ball single to third which sent Carrier home for a 3-2 lead.
The Rebels got back the run in the top of the second, though, with Goode scoring on a passed ball for a 3-3 tie. Goode had reached on an error.
Both teams would score again over the scheduled seven innings, however, one run in the seventh by each team sent the game into extra innings. McGowan reached on a double then scored on a Stephens single to edge Casey up 4-3. Carrier grounded into a double play in the bottom of the seventh, but Lincoln still pushed across a run, with Brown scoring to make it 4-4.
McGowan and Collin Wesley led Casey’s offense with two hits apiece.
Wyatt Hon got the start for Lincoln. He allowed four runs off six hits over nine innings. He struck out 11 Casey batters and walked one.
Lawson Hon, Carrier and Lawhorn all came on in relief. Lawson Hon gave up two hits and had four strikeouts. Lawhorn gave up five runs off one hit and four walks. He had one strikeout. Carrier gave up one hit and one walk. He had one strikeout.
Casey put four pitchers on the mound in the game. Adam King gave up three runs on five hits over one inning, striking out three batters. Phillips was up for six innings, giving up one run off seven hits with one walk and three strikeouts. McGowan was on for two innings, giving up two hits and a walk with one strikeout. Stephens went three innings, allowing two hits and a walk with two strikeouts.
