Ms. Kandie Adkinson, Administrative Section Supervisor in the Office of Kentucky Secretary of State, will discuss “Kentucky Land Patents & Tax Lists” at the Joint Chapters’ DAR meeting sponsored by the Logan-Whitley Chapter, at the Lincoln County Public Library on Tuesday, April 16, 2019, at 6:30 p.m.

Adkinson’s program will include an overview of the land patenting process established by the Virginia Land Laws of 1779 and the various patent series introduced after Kentucky’s statehood in 1792.

Adkinson, who will be providing handouts, will also discuss internet access of digitized warrants, surveys, and grants included in land patent files as well as the importance of using tax lists to determine patentees. She will stress the significance of using these records for historical and genealogical research.

Adkinson began her career in state government in the Preservation Lab at the Kentucky Historical Society in 1978. Her duties included researching and preserving land patent documents. She has been employed in the Land Office Division of the Office of Secretary of State since July 1984. During her tenure, she has overseen the completion of the document preservation project and the development of the Land Office portion of the Secretary of State’s website.

Raised in Mercer County, Adkinson has presented similar programs in neighboring states, as well as Samford University, for genealogists, surveyors, and those associated with Kentucky land title. She is a member of the Jane McAfee Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, First Families of Kentucky, and other organizations that seek to preserve Kentucky history.
