LCHS to present Disney’s ‘Newsies’

The Lincoln County High School chorus and drama departments are teaming up to present Disney’s “Newsies: The Musical” for two shows.

Performances will take place at 7 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, March 28-29, at the Stuart Underwood Auditorium at Lincoln County High School.

The story of “Newsies” is based on the real-life Newsboy Strike of 1899 in New York City. The musical tells the story of Jack Kelly, a rebellious newsboy who dreams of a life as an artist away from the big city. After publishing giant Joseph Pulitzer raises newspaper prices at the newsboys’ expense, Kelly and his fellow newsies take action. With help from the beautiful female reporter Katherine Plumber, all of New York City soon recognizes the power of “the little man.”

The musical is based on the book by Harvey Fierstein with music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Jack Feldman. It was originally produced on Broadway by Disney Theatrical Productions. The stage musical, which is based on the 1992 movie by the same name, is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International.

Among a cast of more than 30 students, featured roles in the show include Samuel Bullock as “Jack Kelly,” Jessie Wilson as “Katherine Plumber,” Allison Westerfield as “Crutchie,” Trey Baldwin as “Davey Jacobs,” Celia San Juan as “Les Jacobs,” Weston Baker as “Joseph Pulitzer,” Sophia Cornett as “Race,” and Julia Felipe as “Medda Larkin.”

The musical is being accompanied by a pit orchestra, which includes Brookley Carrier, Harlie Blevins, Emily Spears, Katie Koontz, Dagan Robbins, Landen Bryant, Jim Stites, Laura Lee Wesley and Johnna Dell Ward.

The ticket cost is $10. All tickets will be sold at the door.
