LOUISVILLE — The Interior Journal won seven awards in the Excellence in Kentucky Newspapers contest sponsored by the Kentucky Press Association.

Nancy Leedy, editor, came away with four second-place awards, two third-place awards and one honorable mention from the KPA Winter Convention held at the Marriott East in Louisville.

She won her second-place awards for Best Sports Story, Best Sports Feature Story, Best Sports Page/Section and Best Headline.

The Best Sports Story was for Leedy’s story on the 2018 Class 2A, Region 5 Cross Country Championships and Lincoln County Middle School seventh-grader Alexis Slone’s state-qualifying run in the race.
“This was a strong piece, with good sources and a good description of the athletes and the race itself,” the judges wrote. “A solid piece with great photos. Great job!”

The Best Headline choices by Leedy which earned her a second-place included “Bad to the Bow” for an archery story, “MOOO! Stanford prepares for Cow Bell Days” and “Pedal to the Medal,” on an archery story.

The Best Feature Story entry chosen for second place was on Lincoln County Patriot basketball manager Justin Blevins getting his first start for the team on Senior Night.
Three separate issues had to be submitted for each entry in the Best Sports Page/Section category and the strength of the entry merited Leedy a second place honor.

Leedy’s third-place honors came in the categories of Best Feature Picture and Best Sports Picture Essay. The feature picture winner was of the Lincoln County basketball pep section and the picture essay was from the 2018 Meet The Patriot basketball kickoff event.

Honorable mention was in the Best Sports Picture category.
