STANFORD — The Lincoln County girls basketball team, which scored 94 points against South Laurel on Monday, hit the century mark Friday in a 103-32 blowout win over visiting Madison Central.

The last time Lincoln passed the 100-point mark was Jan. 27, 2017 when the Lady Patriots and the Boyle County Lady Rebels set the state scoring record in Lincoln’s 112-110 overtime win.

“It’s special to go over 100,” Lincoln coach Cassandra McWhorter said. “We were close the other night at South Laurel when we got 94 and then there were some games last year where we were up there. But you don’t see that a lot in girls basketball, so that’s special.”

In a contest that was a no-doubter from Lincoln’s 31-8 run in the first quarter, Lady Patriot fans reserved their biggest cheer for reserve freshman Claudia Padgett, who scored a bucket in the paint to push Lincoln over the 100-point mark with 2:08 left.

To say the Lady Patriots had a hot-hand in the lopsided victory would be an understatement. Lincoln shot 70 percent (14-for-20) from the field in the opening frame, then followed with a 75 percent effort (12-for-16) in the second period and 64.3 percent (9-for-14) in the third before finishing at 63.6 percent (42-for-66) overall. The Lady Patriots were at 52.2 percent (12-for-23) from 3-point range overall, with their best effort of 7-for-9 3’s coming in the second period as the Lady Pats extended their lead out to 64-12 at the half.

“Hot, en fuego …. I don’t know how many words you could use to describe it, but we came out really putting the ball in the hole and knocking shots down from everywhere on the floor, layups, 3-pointers,” McWhorter said. “There was one spot right in front of their bench where I think every player hit a shot from that side of the floor. I’m just really proud of how we came out and put the ball in the hole tonight. We played as a team. We had 19 assists at halftime.”

It would take one minute, 11 seconds for Lincoln to heat up, with its first two shot attempts missing their target. Kelsey Powell finally put the first points up on the scoreboard hitting inside with 7:41 on the clock for Madison Central’s only lead of the game, 2-0.

Starting with an Emma King layup scored off a turnover, Lincoln (4-0) would hit 23 of its next 28 shot attempts to overtake the Lady Indians, exploding on a 56-6 scoring blitz to go ahead 56-8 with 2:41 to play in the first half.

King, who had a game-high 27 points on 10-for-16 shooting, 5-for-8 from 3-point range, tallied 23 of her 27 points in the first half as Lincoln took a 64-12 lead into the break.

King was just one of six Lady Patriots hitting double figures in the win. Maddy Boyle poured in 16 points on 8-for-10 shooting, Kaitlynn Wilks went 6-for-7 for 13 points, Zaria Napier was 3-for-3 for 11 points and Trinity Shearer and reserve Haleigh Releford contributed 10 points each. Shearer was 4-for-8 shooting and Releford was 4-for-5.

“It’s a great night when everybody has an opportunity to score, and almost everybody did,” McWhorter said. “If we can consecutively, no matter who we’re playing, have three or four players in double figures – I’d prefer five or six every night – it really takes pressure off when you’ve got several different girls that, at any point in the game, can put up double digits.”

Lincoln had 10 of its 12 players scoring, with the bench providing 26 points.

“For our fans and our coaches it was a fun game to watch,” McWhorter said.

Not so much for Central and its players, coaches and fans.

Central’s offense hit the deep freeze after Powell’s opening goal, with the Lady Indians (2-3) going 4-for-23 from the field during Lincoln’s scoring surge. Central finished at 26 percent overall, connecting on just 13 of 50 shot attempts, 2 of 13 from 3-point range.

The Lady Pats performed strong on both ends of the court, with the hot hand on offense and a stymying defense. But was McWhorter happy with Lincoln’s play from start to finish?

“Honestly, I was very disappointed with our defense at the very beginning of the game because we started out in man-to-man and we got beat to the hole about three times,” she said. “I was frustrated with that, but we jumped in our press just to kind of get us going and got back out of it …. Once we got into a rhythm, things started clicking and we just took care of business from there.”

Jekauri McKeithen was the only Lady Indian hitting double figures in the game, scoring 12 points on 5-for-14 shooting.
