Stanford council lacks quorum, postpones meeting

Ernst, Curlis recognized for years of service
STANFORD — The Stanford City Council could not vote on any matters last Thursday, due to the lack of a quorum, but they did honor two local people for their years of service to the city.
Scottie Ernst, current City Council member and incoming Mayor of Stanford, was recognized for his 14 years serving in a seat on the City Council.
Mayor Eddie Carter presented Ernst with a plaque Thursday night.
“In appreciation of your 14 years of dedication and commitment to the City of Stanford as a City Council member, 14 years, folks,” Carter said.
Ernst said he has done his best a City Council member and will continue to do so as mayor.
“I look forward to a different role in city government, as mayor, and I’ll try to do the best I can,” he said.
Ella Curlis, who was recently elected to the council and will begin serving in January, was also honored Thursday for her years of service to the city as a Water Board Commissioner.
“The City of Stanford would like to recognize and thank Ella Mae Curlis for her 12 years of service to the Stanford City Water Department,” Carter said. “We appreciate your hard work and commitment in helping to grow and build the Stanford Water Department.”
Since only three City Council members could attend Thursday night’s meeting, the city was not able to take any action on the renewal of the Atmos Energy Franchise contract and discussion of a possible change to the business license penalty date.
Carter said a special-meeting will be called to discuss the items on the regular agenda that could not be voted on Thursday. The council debated holding the special meeting prior to the swearing in ceremony for newly elected officials on Dec. 18. but did not officially schedule the meeting Thursday night.
The mayor did update the council members on the purchase of the four 2019 Dodge Chargers for the police department, saying the vehicles could be here by the third week of December.
“That’ll be a good Christmas gift to the police department,” Carter said.
Carter also said the drainage work on Portman Avenue is complete.
