Lady Pat soccer team falls to Model

STANFORD — Jaylee Carlton, McKenzie Settles and Maddy Boyle scored a goal apiece Saturday for the Lincoln County Lady Patriot soccer team, but it wouldn’t be enough as visiting Richmond Model took home the 6-3 win.
“They were the better team,” Lincoln coach Wendy Estes said of Model’s Lady Patriots. “They brought the better game this evening.”
The two teams were embroiled in a defensive battle for most of the first half, before Model finally knocked the goose egg off its side of the scoreboard with just 59.8 seconds left in the half. Virginia Creech scored with a putback shot on goal to give Model a 1-0 lead at the break.
Model (5-6-4) wasted little time getting into goal in the second half. Karson Ball scored the first of her two goals in the game just 46 seconds into the second half to make it 2-0.
Lincoln (5-8) had the opportunity to get a goal back just over a minute after the Ball goal, with a penalty kick awarded the Lady Patriots after a handball in the goal box against Model. Boyle took the shot for Lincoln with 38:02 on the clock, but Model goalkeeper Natalie Dedic deflected the ball up and over the boal.
Maya Valencia made it a 3-0 ballgame with 32:00 to play. Valencia scored the goal, the first of her two second-half goals, on a breakaway.
Lincoln finally broke on the scoreboard with 27:43 showing. Boyle made a back pass to Carlton in front of goal and Carlton powered in the shot for a 3-1 margin.
Six minutes later, Settles tallied to trim Model’s lead to 3-2.
Model did not allow Lincoln any closer.
With 21:01 on the clock, Ball scored her second goal with a shot into the back left corner of the net, Valencia went one-on-one with Lincoln goalkeeper Dallis Brown before scoring her second goal with 12:50 left, then, with 5:08 to play, Juia Luxon scored to put Model up 6-2.
The Lady Patriots would score the last goal of the game. Boyle pounded in a shot on Model’s McKenna Tuttle with 1:52 to go for the 6-3 final.
“After that first half, it was nervous,” Estes said. “I think both teams were a little lethargic that first half. They just woke up sooner. Once they started hitting, it was hit after hit after hit. We did come back with three. We definitely came back and made our presence known but it was sort of a little bit too little, too late.”
“I think if we’d started out with that performance the first half it might have had a little bit different outcome.”
Estes attributed some of Lincoln’s lethargy in the early action to a change in routine.
“Saturday afternoon. Not being in that school routine. A lot going on. The pep buses last night. Obviously, the football game. And you have the Apple Festival going on. Not having that daily routine and discipline may have been the difference, “ she said. “It’s okay. It happens.”
“The girls have had a tremendous season, incredible season,” added Estes. “Much improvement all across the field, we just fell on the short end this evening.”
