Slone, Bastin, Grubbs win in rare home meet

STANFORD — The Lincoln County cross country teams have limited opportunity to defend their turf with most, if not all of their meets contested on the road.

Tuesday afternoon was one of those rare opportunities, and defend their turf they did. Lincoln runners crossed the finish line in first place in three of the six races contested in the small meet and they also earned three runner-up spots.

Alexis Slone, an eighth-grader, won the 3.1-mile girls varsity run, Abigail Bastin, a fifth-grader, won the 1.8-mile girls middle school race and Levi Grubbs, a fourth-grader, won the 1.1-mile boys elementary race.

It was a 1-2 finish …. No, it was a 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9 finish for Lincoln in the girls varsity run. Only two teams competed in the race – Lincoln and Garrard County – and no Lady Lion runner finished ahead of the Lady Patriots. Slone posted the best time in the race, winning in 24:23 and her freshman teammate Ava Morgan claimed the runner-up spot in 25:42.

There was more competition between teams in the girls middle school race, with runners from four different teams on the course, but that didn’t stop Bastin from racing to the front of the pack. Bastin was all alone at the finish of the race, covering the 1.8-mile distance in 13:50. The runner-up athlete finished over two minutes back, with Jasmine Pike of Danville Christian Academy crossing in second place in 15:56.

Grubbs posted his victory in the biggest race of the day. Sixty-one runners from five different teams hit the grounds of the LCHS sports complex looking for a win in the boys elementary race, and that honor belonged to Grubbs who posted a winning time of 7:53. It was a Grubbs-Grubbs finish in the race as Trey Grubbs from Lancaster Elementary School placed second in 8:14.

Hosting a small meet would not guarantee a win for the home standing Patriots and Lady Patriots. In the boys varsity run, Lincoln was the only school putting a full team on course against runners from Garrard County and Jonathan Collins of Kentucky School for the Deaf. The Patriots had the numbers but Garrard runner James Ward had the numbers that counted – the race’s best time. The senior runner won in 20:55, coming in just ahead of Lincoln’s Bradley Adams. Adams, a sophomore, finished in 21:28.

East Jessamine’s Mac Kosin, a seventh-grader, took the boys 1.8-mile middle school lrun in a time of 13:42. Lincoln would garner the runner-up spot in the race, with Toby Sallee crossing behind Kosin. Sallee, a sixth-grader, crossed the finish in 14:06.
