STANFORD — An Aug. 20 traffic stop in the Waynesburg area led to the arrest of two men on various charges.

About 8:30 p.m. Monday evening, Lincoln County K9 Deputy Michael Mullins said he was on patrol in the Waynesburg area when he observed a passenger car attempting to enter U.S. 27. He initiated the stop after noticing that the vehicle was missing the rear window glass and that neither occupant was wearing a seat belt.

According to Mullins, the driver of the vehicle, Michael G. Coy, 39, of Waynesburg, stated that he did not have a valid driver’s license and, upon further investigation, “it was determined that the driver was wanted on a parole warrant.”

During the stop, the passenger, Sherril Harris Jr., 51, of Eubank, stated that there was marijuana in the car, which prompted Mullins to deploy his K9 partner, Luma.

On the open air sniff around the vehicle, Luma alerted to the driver side door area and a probable cause search of the vehicle was conducted. Marijuana, suspected methamphetamine and several items of drug paraphernalia were located in the search.

“Suspected marijuana was found along with suspected crystal methamphetamine inside of the vehicle along with baggies, digital scales and cash,” Mullins stated. “The passenger also had suspected crystal methamphetamine inside of his wallet and an open container of vodka was found inside of the vehicle.”

A hypodermic syringe was also found.

Coy was arrested on the following charges: parole warrant, no operator’s license, improper equipment, open container, inadequate silencer (muffler), failure to wear seat belts, failure to produce insurance card and windows not safety glass.

Harris, who Mullins said admitted that the suspected narcotics belonged to him, was arrested and charged with trafficking in a controlled substance 1st offense (meth), possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana.

Coy and Harris remain lodged in the Lincoln County Regional Jail.
