STANFORD — Tuesday at 4 p.m. was the deadline to file to run for any of the local offices up for election in Lincoln County this fall.

The slate was pretty full by Monday, but eight more people came into County Clerk Sonny Spoonamore’s office before the deadline Tuesday to set the slate for November.

In addition to the local elections, there is one question on the ballot as Crab Orchard residents will be asked: “Are you in favor of the sale of alcoholic beverages in Crab Orchard, Kentucky?”

A breakdown of the local races follows:

City Council Races

The Stanford City Council and Hustonville City Council are poised to be the biggest races this year, with 11 candidates in the mix for the six seats on each council. At Crab Orchard, six people filed for the four city commissioner seats.

In the Stanford race, current council members Naren James, Sara Givens, Ronnie Deatherage, John W. Sallee Jr. and Peggy Denham Hester filed for re-election.

Those joining the five incumbents (listed in order of filling) are: Billy Hastie, Dalton Miller, Joe Tackett, Ella Mae Curlis, Amy Lu Hazlett and Chad F. Davis.

Hustonville has four current council members seeking re-election, with Jimmy Evans, Dudley Hardin, Alan Sims and Jimmy Lane all going for another term.

Seven others have thrown their hat into the ring for one of the six seats. Those challengers are: Larry “Pup” Doss, Lee Clanin, John D. Couch, Donna L. Hendricks, Richard W. Cooper, Margaret Smith and Timothy Smith.

Two of the current four Crab Orchard City Commissioners filed for re-election this year, with Keith Saylor and Juanita Pettit both seeking another term.

The challengers for the city commission are Wayne Blount, Bill Dyehouse, Kenneth L. Manuel and Mike Eldridge.

Mayoral Races

It looked as if there would be a four-man race for the Stanford Mayor position midday Monday. Incumbent Eddie Carter, current councilman Scottie Ernst and city attorney Chris Reed filed their papers for mayor earlier, and the list grew to four when Timothy C. Lair filed to run for the office around noon Monday. However, the four-man race lasted only a matter of minutes with Reed coming into Spoonamore’s office not long after Lair to withdraw from the race.

Hustonville and Crab Orchard’s current mayors both have opposition this fall. Hustonville mayor David Peyton is being challenged by current councilman Marc Spivey and Crab Orchard mayor Billy Reed Shelton is being challenged by Priscilla Eldridge.

School Board Races

Winfield S. “Win” Smith is unopposed in Lincoln County School Board District One and Ricky Lane is unopposed in District Two.

Soil & Water

Three people have filed to run for Lincoln County Soil & Water Conservation: Paul Jeffries, Kevin Dale Kirkpatrick and Dale Osterman.

Candidates will be drawing for position on the ballot at a later date.

Candidates for partisan offices were determined in the May primary election.
