The Lincoln County Senior Citizens Center celebrated May Older Americans Month with the first Lincoln County Senior Citizens prom on Friday, May 18 at Back Porch Club House.

Over 100 seniors and guests attended the prom with many of the seniors being escorted by their sons, grandsons, daughters, granddaughters and friends. Everyone had a joyful time.

The play list to “Waltz Down Memory Lane” was selected by the seniors and they danced the night away with music from all genres and decades including greatest hits from Al Green, Buddy Holly, Elvis Presley, George Jones, James Brown, Johnny Cash, Marvin Gay, Stevie Wonder, The Temptations and even some new era dances to The Cupid Shuffle.

“There were very few from our center who had the opportunity to attend their high school proms when they were younger. We were able to make that happen!” stated Miranda Perkins, Lincoln County Senior Citizens director.

Mr. Jeffrey Helm and Mrs. Shirley Wade, both of Stanford, were chosen as Prom King and Prom Queen for the evening.

Back Porch donated their venue and DJ services. Contributions from the community and donors were used to cover the food expense, which was prepared by Back Porch staff. Community partners sponsored this event with monetary donations, door prizes and raffle items.

“We could not do what we do each day for our seniors, without the generous support of our loving community! We were able to use these contributions to make this a FREE event for our seniors and their guests,” Perkins said.

Other volunteers helped make the night special by helping the seniors with their hair, nails and makeup as they dressed for the event at the center. Perkins added that Goodwill of Kentucky and Salvation Army provided clothing for our attendees. Seniors were able to find the perfect outfit with the help of center staff, who personally shopped for the perfect sizes and colors.

The Center would like to thank all of the staff and volunteers for the tremendous amount of hours, planning and sweat spent into making this a day to remember.

The evening was a great success and we hope to have an even bigger event next year for May Older Americans Month.
