Lucy Singleton breaks long-time CKC record

Published 10:45 am Thursday, May 17, 2018

Friday was a record-breaking day for the Central Kentucky Conference with six new records set in the championship meet at West Jessamine Middle School in Nicholasville.

Three records were broken in both the boys’ events and the girls’ events, with new benchmarks set in boys’ 400-meter relay, 300-meter hurdles and 200-meter dash and girls’ 400-meter relay, 800-meter dash and high jump.

However, none was quite as record-smashing as the one in the girls’ 800-meter dash as not one, but two athletes broke a long-standing record time.

Typically, a record-setting finish would guarantee a victory but that was not the case Friday as both Rockcastle County’s Virginia Dotson and Lincoln County’s Lucy Singleton both beat the time of 2:22.80 set by Elizabeth Johnson of Frankfort in 1970. Dotson claimed the win with a time of 2:17.66 and Singleton garnered the runner-up spot in 2:21.30.

Singleton’s teammate McKenzie Settles also scored a Top 5 finish in the 800, placing fifth in 2:32.44. Settles had two individual Top 5 performances, adding a fifth-place finish in the 400-meter dash. Her time in the 400 was 1:01.82.

Lincoln’s girls, who finished ninth out of 13 teams, had five Top 5 finishes in the large meet.

Singleton, Settles, Shayley Reed  and Ava Morgan teamed up for the 3200-meter relay and placed third overall in a time of 10:39.37. Mercer County won the relay event in 10:02.27 and Boyle County was second in 10:06.24.

Alexa Wesley rounded out Lincoln’s list of Top 5-earning athletes, picking up some big points in field competition. Wesley finished fourth out of 22 athletes in high jump, clearing a height of 4-08.00.

The Patriots finished 14th out of 14 teams, with seventh place the Lincoln boys’ high for the meet. The team earned those seventh-place finishes in three different events to give the Patriots six total points.

Darius Napier was in on the scoring in each of the three events for the Patriots. He ran seventh overall in both the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes, with times of 11.66 seconds and 23.97 seconds, respectively, then joined Gavin Skipper, Brady Patterson and Dalyn Pope on the track for the 800-meter relay event. The Lincoln foursome covered the 800-meter distance in 1:38.30.

Boyle County swept the team titles, with the Lady Rebels scoring 111 points for first place and the Rebels getting 145 points. Mercer County and Rockcastle County seriously challenged the Boyle girls for the team title before finishing tied for second place with 110 points. East Jessamine was runner-up in the boys’ division with 117 points and Henry Clay finished third with 80.50 points.

Lincoln County’s middle school athletes had their turn to shine in the Bate Middle School All-Comers meet held last Monday at Admiral Stadium and shine they did as the Lincoln girls won the overall team title with 60 points. Host Bate Middle finished second with 56 points.

The Lincoln girls won five different events, finished as runner-up in four events and took third in two.

Maddy Slone, an eighth-grader, got in on the scoring in four different events, including two individual victories. She won the 100-meter dash in 13.57 seconds then came back to win the 200-meter dash later in the day in a time of 28.78 seconds. She was also a part of Lincoln’s winning 800-meter and 400-meter relay teams. Slone, Kendra Parr, Constance Johnson and Ava Morgan crossed the finish in the 800 in 2:03.16 and the same foursome won the 400 in 58.53 seconds.

Lincoln’s 3200-meter relay team claimed the first win of the meet in a time of 12:11.94. Johnson and Morgan were also on track in that win, teaming up with Angelique Coyne and Alexis Slone to earn the victory.

Lincoln’s middle school boys finished fourth overall at the Bate meet, earning one first-place finish, one second-place finish and one third-place showing.

Sam Singleton celebrated the victory for the boys’ team, finishing at the front of the pack in the boys’ 1600-meter run in a time of 5:34.44. He also scored the third-place points, completing the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 20.83 seconds.

The runner-up finish in the middle school meet went to the 3200-meter relay team. Brady Dotson, Toby Sallee, Elijah Johnson and Singleton crossed the finish line in a time of 12:02.05.
