MORELAND — The man arrested in connection with the shooting death of a 31-year-old Hustonville woman has been charged with murder.

A Lincoln County grand jury returned a murder indictment against Shawn E. Faulkner, 26, of Hustonville, who was arrested Feb. 5 by Kentucky State Police and accused of shooting Kala Francisco at a home on Raintree Drive.

Initially, Faulkner was arrested on charges of possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Trooper Robert Purdy, spokesman for Kentucky State Police Post 7 in Richmond, said last week that he could not share specific details about the ongoing investigation but that the murder charge was a result of information provided by the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office.

KSP Detective Frank Thornberry, who is overseeing the ongoing investigation, said this week that the collection of evidence following the shooting incident is what led to Faulkner’s arrest.

“It just took a while because we had to gather evidence,” he said. “That’s the biggest reason.”

Police obtained a search warrant for the residence following the shooting, according to the detective.

Thornberry said it’s common knowledge that Faulkner and Francisco were dating.

Francisco’s children, who were in the home at the time of the shooting but were not harmed, are now living with family members, Thornberry said.

According to the detective, Faulkner was prohibited from possessing a handgun due to a prior felony conviction related to a 2012 robbery in Boyle County.
