Lincoln hauls in hardware in Patriot Games

STANFORD — The Lincoln County High School girls and boys track and field teams were feeling slightly heavier following Friday’s Patriot Games, as the host teams hauled in a bit of hardware in their first home meet of the season.

The Lady Patriot and Patriot teams garnered a total of 13 medals for Top 3 finishes in the meet. In addition, the team was awarded 27 ribbons for scoring in meet events. 

Packing the heaviest haul from the Patriot Games was the Lady Patriot team, which earned nine Top 3 medals and 10 ribbons. The medals won by the Lincoln girls were for two first-place finishes, three runner-up finishes and four third-place finishes. The Patriots earned four Top 3 medals, with two runner-up and two third-place medals. They collected 17 ribbons

Finishing ahead of all competitors to win their respective events were the Lady Patriot 800-meter and 400-meter relay teams. The foursome of seniors Tate Newcomb and Courtney Snow, freshman Lucy Singleton and eight-grader Maddy Slone, sprinted to the finish first in both events, winning by a margin of just under six seconds over Madison Southern in the 800 and edging West Jessamine by about three-tenths of a second in the 400. Lincoln covered the 800 relay in 1:54.04, Southern was second in 1:59.88. In the 400, Lincoln finished in 54.35 seconds. West was second in 54.63 seconds. 

Both teams got in on clinching runner-up finishes, with the Lady Patriots getting three and the Patriots, two.

Singleton was also a part of the Lincoln girls runner-up finish in the 3200-meter relay event and individually in the 800-meter dash. Singleton and fellow freshman McKenzie Settles, junior Shaylee Reed and eighth-grader Ava Morgan placed second behind West Jessamine in a time of 10:42.64. West’s time was 10:35.96. In the 800-meter dash, Singleton finished in 2:33.60 for second place. Victoria Dotson of Rockcastle County won the 800 in 2:27.11.

The Lady Patriots went off-track to garner their third runner-up finish, with high jump field competitior Alexa Wesley racking up the points. Wesley, a junior, cleared 4-06.00 to finish second in the event. West Jessamine’s Anna Hylen was a decisive winner with the day’s best jump of 4-10.00.

The Patriots earned their runner-up medals in both track and field events. 

Hurdler Malcolm Wright, a freshman, finished second in the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 48.79 seconds. West Jessamine junior Isaac Kratzer won the event in 47.95 seconds. 

Jacob Napier, a sophomore, also celebrated a runner-up finish at the Patriot Games, placing second in discus with a throw of 94-03.00. Madison Southern’s Cody Blair had the longest throw of the event, going 109-02.00 for the win.

The Lincoln girls would finish in the top three in three of the four relays contested, adding a third-place finish in the 1600-meter relay. Morgan, Settles, Snow and Reed were on track for the Lady Pats in the race and they finished in 4:38.85. 

Alexis Slone, a seventh-grader, went the distance in the meet’s longest race, the 3200-meter run, running third overall in a time of 13:32.72.

Discus and shot put would round out the Lady Patriots’ roll of Top 3 finishes. Freshman Suzan Johnson finished third in discus with a throw of 70-00.00 and junior Abigail Carter was third in shot put with a toss of 26-06.00.

Relays provided the Patriots all their third-place medals. The 3200-meter relay team of junior Austin Wethington, Jerek Pope, sophomore Gabe Singleton and freshman Carter Muse covered the distance in 9:55.45. The 400-meter relay team of senior Brady Patterson, junior Darius Napier, Dalyn  Pope and freshman Gavin Skipper raced to a third-place finish in their event in 48.53 seconds.
