On Feb. 1, Angela Arnett Garner, chair of the legislative and public affairs committee for Kentucky Indigenous Peoples, presented a proposal to the Stanford City Council to pass a permanent Indigenous Peoples’ Day proclamation.

Garner explained the historic implications of it’s passage and agreed to organize all future Indigenous Peoples’ Day events in Stanford.

Stanford was the first in the state to pass a temporary proclamation last year to celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day, along with the federal Columbus Day holiday.

Lexington followed suit and passed a similar proclamation in October last year.

The motion to make Indigenous Peoples’ Day a permanent holiday in Stanford carried with a 5-1 vote last Thursday.
