Feedback and teacher participation sought on social studies standards

FRANKFORT — The Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) is seeking feedback on the current social studies standards.

The state’s social studies standards have been taught in Kentucky classrooms since 2006. Standards outline what students are expected to learn in each grade to successfully transition to the next level of learning. The curriculum or methods and materials used to teach the standards is a separate issue and is decided at the local level.

Senate Bill 1 (2017) calls for the KDE to implement a process for reviewing all academic standards and aligned assessments beginning in the 2017-18 school year. The schedule calls for one or two content areas to be reviewed each year and every six years after that on a rotating basis.

To provide feedback on the Kentucky Academic Standards for Social Studies, use the following link: https://www.research.net/r/YLTTBCF. Due to the amount of text within the survey, it is recommended that surveys be completed on a full-size computer or laptop screen. Feedback on the current social studies standards will be collected by the Appalachia Regional Conference Center (ARCC) through Feb. 22.

Also, KDE is seeking social studies teachers of all grade levels to apply to participate in the social studies standards revision work. Applicants will be required to meet five to 10 days during the spring and summer of the 2018 school year and possibly into the 2018-19 school year.

Selected team members will receive reimbursement for travel expenses. Substitute teacher expenses will be reimbursed to the teacher’s school district. Potential applicants are asked to verify the willingness of their school or district to release them for work dates throughout the school year. For those interesting in participating the application is available at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/CLT7C87.

Applications will be accepted through Feb. 13, with selected team members notified on or before Feb. 20.
