Families receives food, presents

STANFORD — Christmas came a little early at Stanford Elementary School (SES) last week as multiple families received boxes of food and presents.

The SES cafeteria tables were all covered in boxes of nonperishable foods and wrapped presents as SES Family Resource Center Coordinator Susan Miller signed families in and showed them to their items.

There were 49 SES children on the Angel Tree and 27 families who received items this year, thanks to community support, Miller said. There were two girls and one boy who also received brand new bicycles this year.

“The goal next year is to get a bike for every child,” Miller said.

Stanford Church of Christ was a major sponsor of the holiday giving, she said.

Each family received a letter from the church, as well as information about the congregation.

“We realize money is very tight this time of year with all the additional expenses and we, as a congregation, wanted to help,” the letter reads. “We contacted Durham’s Grocery in Stanford and they, too, wanted to help. They helped up purchase food at a discounted rate so we could stretch our dollars.”

Each family received three or four boxes containing about 45 different food items, along with a canned ham and 10-pound bag of potatoes.

Miller said each family received a turkey, as well, thanks to Jeremy Cook.
