Fonzo McGuffey, 90

Fonzo McGuffey, 90, of the Highland community in Lincoln County, passed away Saturday, Oct. 21, 2017, at Stanford Health & Rehabilitation. 

Born Tuesday, Aug. 2, 1927, in Highland, he was a son of the late James, Sr. and Dora Watts McGuffey. His loving wife, whom he married October 24, 1986, is Emma Padgett McGuffey of Highland. Fonzo was a farmer and worked for many years as a custodian for Fort Logan Hospital and the Lincoln County Board of Education. In his spare time, he enjoyed gardening, flowers, walking, and working puzzles. 

In addition to his wife, Fonzo leaves behind one son, Doug Padgett (Teresa) of Waynesburg; three daughters, Linda Thompson (Norville) of Stanford, Donna Perkins (Jimmy) of Waynesburg, and Heloise Reed of Highland; six grandchildren, Dawn Hanes (Tim), Melanie Hutti (Matt), Josh Thompson (Juliana), Jeremiah Perkins, Zach Padgett (Alla), and Laura Thompson; special sister-in-law, Georgia McGuffey of Stanford; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Fonzo was preceded in death by his first wife, Sara Duncan McGuffey; one granddaughter, Vickie Reed; siblings, Jesse McGuffey, Edna McGuffey Gander, Catherine McGuffey Bilbrey, William “Bill” McGuffey, Clarence McGuffey, Bessie McGuffey Downey, James W. McGuffey, Jr., and Lonzo McGuffey; step-brother, Lawrence Phillips; and special nephew, Larry McGuffey. 

Funeral services were Wednesday, Oct. 25, at Fox & Friend Funeral Home with Bro. Chester Cornett officiating the service. Burial followed in Fairview Baptist Church Cemetery. 

Fonzo’s grandsons and nephews served as active pallbearers. Fonzo’s granddaughters, nieces, and caretakers, along with Orlis Sparkman, John Boy Sparkman, Louise Jenkins, and Bernice Lucas served as honorary pallbearers.

Fox & Friend Funeral Home, Stanford, was entrusted with Fonzo’s arrangements.
