Lions Club to hold annual Candy Day 

Come on, come all to “Candy Day” Saturday, Oct. 14 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Walmart, Durham’s Grocery and Save-A-Lot in Stanford. You will receive a “free” roll of candy. All donations will be greatly appreciated. Come out and see us! This event is sponsored by the Stanford Lions Club. 

Logan-Whitley DAR Chapter October Meeting

The October meeting will be held Tuesday, October 17, 2017, 5:30 p.m. (arrive before 5:30 p.m. and order your supper) at the Kentucky Depot Restaurant, 119 Metker Trail, Stanford. The program will be “Local historic preservation” with guest speaker Garlan Vanhook. 

Chili Cook-Off and Spooktacular Festival

The City of Crab Orchard is hosting a Chili Cook-Off and Spooktacular Festival on Saturday, Oct 28 on Main Street. Events will run from 3 to 11 p.m. Entry fee for chili cook off is $10  and the winner takes all. Cooking time starts at 3 p.m., tasting at 5 p.m. and judging will stop at 7 p.m. Tasting and judging fee is $5 per person to purchase bracelet in order to eat, taste and judge entries. There also will be an adult pumpkin carving contest, children pumpkin painting contest, children costume contest, cake and pie auction, sack races, pumpkin roll, hay rides and a street dance with the band Lawless. The Democratic Woman’s Club will meet at the Kentucky Depot, Thursday, Oct. 12 at 5 p.m. Diane Miller with the Lincoln County Health Department will speak on Women’s Health. All ladies are invited to attend. 

McDowell Wellness Center offering “self-offense” classes

Are you really prepared to do what it takes if your life is threatened?  McDowell Wellness Center can help with the new “self-offense” class for women. Participants will learn to do what it takes when their life is at stake. Specifically, how to survive the most critical five seconds of their life. Self-offense takes a different approach than self-defense. Self-offense focuses on actions that can be taken during an attack. Classes will be held each Wednesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. beginning November 1. For more information or to register, call McDowell Wellness Center at (859) 936-9355.

7th Annual Pollyann Ridge reunion

The 7th annual Pollyann Ridge reunion will be held Saturday, Oct. 28 from 11 a.m. to ??? at the Eubank Senior Citizens Center.  The reunion is for everyone who lives on or lived on Pollyann Ridge. Please bring food, memories, and photos to display for everyone to enjoy.

10th annual Veterans Appreciation Day

The 10th annual Veterans Appreciation Day will be held Friday, Nov. 10 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Danville National Guard Armory to honor all veterans from Boyle, Garrard, Lincoln and Mercer. A shuttle service will be provided from the Danville Stadium. Disabled parking available. Fish and barbecue dinners will be served. Door prizes. This is held by the Heritage Hospice, Inc. Veterans Committee.

RAP group to meet

The Lincoln County RAP (Relatives as Parents) group will meet Tuesday, Oct. 24, at 5 p.m. at Calvary Hill Baptist Church, 100 John Street in Stanford. These meetings are for anyone raising children other than their own and are to provide: support, referrals, resources and coping skills. LC Retired Teachers

All Lincoln County Retired Teachers are encouraged to attend our October 17 meeting to hear speaker Austin Gage, Legislative Assistant to Congressman Hal Rogers, our Fifth District Representative in the U.S. Congress. We have asked him to address H.R. 1205 repealing the Government Pension Offset (GPO) and the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP). These bills were passed several years ago that prohibit a teacher from receiving spousal Social Security benefits, as well as prevent him/her from receiving full Social Security benefits from any previous employment under Social Security. Five House members from Kentucky have agreed to co-sponsor this bill. Congressman Rogers is not one of them. The meeting is a potluck lunch at Lincoln County Senior Citizens Center in Stanford at 11:30 a.m. Please plan to attend. Meat is provided for $2; please bring a side dish or dessert. Also bring your items for the backpack program for Lincoln County students.

Blood drive to be held

Blood donors help Kentucky patients and support the healthcare of their communities by providing life-saving blood components for patients who depend on transfusions. In a sense, they have the community’s back. That’s why Kentucky Blood Center (KBC) is providing a fun “I’ve got your back” T-shirt for donors at the next blood drive  scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 19 from 1 to 6 p.m. in the fellowship hall at the Stanford Presbyterian Church, 213 East Main Street, Stanford. Blood donors must be 17-years-old (16 with parental consent), weigh at least 110 pounds, be in general good health, show a photo I.D. and meet additional requirements.

Health Department to host free Diabetes management course

The Lincoln County Health Department will be hosting a 2-part Diabetes Self-Management Training beginning October 18 and concluding on October 25. Both days will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will be held at the Lincoln County Health Department  This is a free comprehensive training course that will help attendees learn how to effectively manage their diabetes. Annual Galilean Quilt & Craft Auction

28th annual Galilean Quilt & Craft Auction will be held Friday and Saturday, Oct. 13 and 14 on the campus of the Galilean Home. Friday’s schedule: 4:30 p.m. Spaghetti dinner, 6:30 p.m. singing program followed by craft auction. Saturday’s schedule: 7 a.m. pancake breakfast and 10 a.m. Quilt auction (lunch will be available). (Over 300 quilts and crafts will be auctioned off and there will be 100’s of buy-now items.)

City of Stanford city wide cleanup dates

The City of Stanford city wide fall cleanup has been scheduled for: October 16 through October 20 and October 23 through October 27. All items for pickup are to be placed at the curb. Items exempt from pickup are tires, batteries, paint cans, all hazardous chemicals. Tree limbs no longer than six feet and tied in bundles and placed by the curb will be picked up. Halloween Spook-tacular and Whitley’s Wicked Trail – Oct. 27 & 28 – small fee. Children participate in costume contest and other fun activities. Adults and the brave at heart can venture the haunted trail deep into the dark paths of the unknown. Not recommended for young – use parental guidance. No reservations required.

LCHS Class of ‘92 to hold 25-year class reunion

The Lincoln County High School Class of 1992 will have its 25-year class reunion Saturday, Oct. 21, at Keeneland in Lexington. Come join all your classmates for a tailgate style lunch starting at 11 a.m. A bar-b-que style meat will be provided. Please bring a side dish and your drinks along with some chairs. LCHS Class of 1997  – Family Fun at the Park will be Saturday, Oct. 21 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at First Southern Veterans Park (Soccer Complex Entrance) Lions Club Pavilion and Community Building, 400 Hwy. 150 East in Stanford. Bring the family out to the park to socialize and have fun. We will have access to the pavilion, community building, and playground; Cotton candy and shaved ice will be available from 1 to 2:30 p.m.; and games for all. FREE fun activities for children ages 2-5. Wear your favorite costume and come have fun at the library! Costume optional, you do not have to wear a costume to attend.
