The 2017 Kentucky State Fair kicked off in Cloverville with 715 youth competing in the 4-H Country Ham Contest.

To participate in the country ham project, youth cure two hams over the course of 8 months. In addition to curing their own hams, youth complete six hours of training, and give a speech about their ham at the state fair. Hams are judged on aroma, lean to fat ratio, and appearance.

Lincoln County 4-H would like to congratulate Eli Pleasants, Laurissa Jarman, and Kerynna Jarman on completing the 4-H Country Ham Project.

Kerynna received a blue ribbon for her ham, Laurissa earned second place overall in her age division for combined ham and speech scores, and Eli brought home the overall grand champion country ham award. As the best ham out of all 715 submitted, Eli’s ham will be displayed in Cloverville until the end of the state fair.

If youth would like to participate in the 2018 4-H Country Ham Project, please contact 4-H Agent Courtney Brock at the Lincoln County Extension Office by calling (606) 365-2447.
