STANFORD – State police are investigating a Monday morning crash on U.S. 27 that sent three people to the hospital.

The collision occurred just before 9 a.m. Monday morning on U.S. 27, just south of the Lincoln and Garrard county line, according to a press release from Kentucky State Police Post 7 out of Richmond.

According to the preliminary investigation, a 2003 Saturn was traveling north on U.S. 27 when it drove off of the right side of the road and overturned.

All three occupants, identified as 26-year-old Chase Smith, 27-year-old Anthony Fields and 26-year-old Chasity Smith, were airlifted from the scene and transported to the University of Kentucky Hospital.

The injuries and conditions of the three were not available as of press time.

Traffic on U.S. 27 was closed while emergency crews investigated the accident. The roadway was reopened about two hours later, according to state police.

Post 7 spokesperson Trooper Robert Purdy said the preliminary investigation indicates that Chasity Smith was driving the Saturn at the time of the crash.

As far as alcohol or drugs being a factor in the incident, Purdy said it is still early in the investigation.

“Maybe. We’re still pretty early in the investigation, still (have) a bunch of things to try to figure out,” Purdy said.

Trooper Brandon Roark is overseeing the ongoing investigation.
