The Somerset Community College Omicron Zeta Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the academic honor society for two-year colleges, recently held an induction ceremony for new members. 
In order to qualify for admission to Phi Theta Kappa, a student must have a 3.5 cumulative grade point average (GPA), as well as at least 12 transferable hours, or hours that apply toward their degree.
 Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, headquartered in Jackson, Mississippi, is the largest honor society in higher education with over 1,200 chapters on numerous college campuses. The mission of the organization is to “recognize academic achievement of college students and to provide opportunities for them to grow as scholars and leaders.”
“We are so proud of each of these students,” said Dr. Amanda Waterstrat, one of the SCC chapter advisors. “Not only does this induction into Phi Theta Kappa recognize the classroom success they have had, but it also provides these students with new, exciting opportunities to grow personally and professionally. Phi Theta Kappa provides numerous scholarship opportunities for members and also enables students to become part of a much larger network of scholars on a local, regional, national and international level.”
The latest class of inductees included: Ana Upchurch, Wayne County; Madison Smith, London; Ginger Leach, Stanford; Alisha Lee, Somerset; Nicole Disney, London; Jamie Wagers, Manchester; Brandon Sherrill, Somerset; Matt Thorn, Adair County; and Cas McGuffey, Stanford.
The Omicron Zeta Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa is advised by the following SCC staff and faculty: Johnna Atkinson-Bigelow, Allison Horseman, Julie Howe, Alena Morrow and Amanda Waterstrat.
